Distilled water serves as a pure solvent for sodium hydroxide (lye), ensuring it reacts with oils to start the saponification process without contaminants that cause soap scum or rancidity. Sodium hydroxide's role in soap is to trigger saponification, a chemical reaction that transforms oils and fats into soap and glycerin, creating a hard, cleansing bar that can then effectively lift and wash away dirt and oils.
